Geomagnetic Storm Watch - From the Space Weather Prediction Center: February 16, 2011 -- The calm before the storm. Three CMEs are enroute, all a part of the Radio Blackout events on February 13, 14, and 15 (UTC). The last of the three seems to be the fastest and may catch both of the forerunners about mid to late day tomorrow, February 17. Watch this space for updates on the impending -- G2, possibly periods of G3 -- geomagnetic storming.

X2.2 Major Solar Flare - The sun showed some love on Valentines Day. Massive Sunspot 1158 has produced a major X2.2 Class Solar Flare at 01:56 UTC Tuesday. This is the largest Solar Flare of Cycle 24 and a CME could be associated with this event. A strong R3 Radio Blackout has taken place as well.

Is official ..
After increasing solar flux , start anomalic propagations or 300-400km dx in this period .
protons number per cm³ are now value - 12 .

A solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of Feb. 4th, sparking a G2-class (Kp=6) geomagnetic storm, in progress. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras, especially during the hours around local midnight.

mail alert !!

Region 1123 (S23W24) produced
the only C-class x-ray event of the period, a C1.3/Sf at 13/1128Z.
Associated with this event were radio bursts at 245 MHz and 410 MHz.
VHF3 and UHF scatters ..

INCOMING CME: The solar eruption of August 7th might affect Earth after all. Newly-arriving data from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) show a CME heading our way with a significant Earth-directed component. Click on the image to launch a "difference movie" of the expanding cloud. The impact of this lopsided CME probably won't trigger a major geomagnetic storm---but the SOHO data show it could be bigger than expected. High latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras when the cloud arrives probably on August 10th

The first true geomagnetic storm of Cycle 24 which was caused by an incoming CME and Solar Wind + Southward Bz combo is finally starting to taper off. Minor to Severe storming reaching the G3 level (K-Index=7) took place over the past few days. Many aurora contacts were made on VHF, both in northern Europe and northern parts of North America. The timing of the initial impact was very early in the morning Monday in North America, and because of this the Aurora conditions were not as strong as they could have been. It was a nice treat however.

G3 alarm for this solar cycle24

First simtomes: voltage corrections may be required, false alarms triggered on some protection devices.
Second simtomes : intermittent satellite navigation and low-frequency radio navigation problems may occur, HF radio may be intermittent, and aurora has been seen as low as Illinois and Oregon (typically 50° geomagnetic lat.)**.

Sunspot 1046 produces M8.3 Flare - Out of nowhere Sunspot 1046 produced a strong M8.3 Solar flare Friday morning which is now the largest flare of Cycle 24. An R2 Radio Blackout did take place. The image is below and more updates to follow,
